Music and Math and Muggles, oh my! December 4, 2010

I recently came across some of the math doodling videos done by Vi Hart. The premise is that you’re sitting in a boring math class and begin to doodle. While you doodle, you start to think about the mathematical properties of things you’re doodling. She has four of them, but this one is my favorite. It includes knot theory, graph theory, snakes on a plane (though not inclined), and references to Harry Potter, as well as a lot of amusing and cynical references to education.
You can see the rest at her YouTube page.
She also has a video of a Möbius strip music box. I found this one very intriguing because, being a newbie musician, I can’t figure out if the music is just different notes on the second pass through or if the key is actually changing. Anyway, it’s very cute.
I also blog at Engineer Blogs, home away from home to some of the best engineering blogs.
Re: Mobius strip. Different notes for sure.
