Last week, having never been to Florida, I had one day to go exploring. While Universal Studios was awfully tempting, I chose another location: Kennedy Space Center. Rather than bore you with explanations, I’ll give you the photo tour. (My husband graciously consented to be the model for several of these pictures…)
The entrance (if you click on the picture, the full size one will come up and you can read the quote):
After passing through the visitor center entrance, the first thing you see is a bunch of rockets:
And a few capsules (which, of course, are fun to crawl into):
They are currently building the final home for the shuttle Atlantis, which will be on display at about the end of June. I was disappointed it wasn’t ready yet.
Then we hopped the bus and drove past the vehicle assembly building:
And visited the Apollo/Saturn V center:
At the center, they start you by sitting through a simulated launch of one of the missions. There are tons of things on display that relate to the Apollo missions, such as newspapers, space suits, and even the moon rover they practiced on. There’s also a moon rock that you can touch. (I was disappointed that it was polished.) We unfortunately only had about 5 hours, which didn’t feel like nearly enough, but we definitely had a good time.
Thank you, I think I will February 22, 2013

The dog days of winter February 20, 2013

A lot of people ask me how I can stand the winters here. Specifically, they just can’t imagine the cold during the winter. I mean, there can be no up side to -10°F and 30 mph winds. Also, those crazy Dakotans don’t seem to use MKS units. (Psychologically, it’s far worse to think about -23°C with 50 kph winds. Yeah, I know they’re the same, but this is why we keep using English units…)
Anyway, you’re wrong: there is an up side. Specifically, during the months of December to February, we get to see a lot of sun dogs around here. Sun dogs are refraction of sunlight by preferentially oriented ice crystals in the atmosphere. (For more info, you can always check the wiki article.) Sometimes, the refraction is really nice and they look like rainbows. Most of the time, however, it looks like there are two ‘mini suns’ on either side of the sun. They can be very bright.
I remember one particular instance where I had an office mate from India. I just left the office and saw some particularly good sun dogs, so I called her up and told her to go out to the west side of the building and check it out.
“I know what those are!” she said. ”Those are rainbows! I’ve seen those before.”
“Yes, but have you ever seen them made with ice crystals?” She was a bit more intrigued then.
Even better, but more rare, are halos. These happen when the ice crystals are randomly oriented…such as when you have 30 mph winds. Yesterday morning, I got to see one such halo as I got to work. And because it was so cool, I had to share it with all of you.
Admittedly, it’s not the best landscape shot I’ve ever taken. However, I was in a hurry to get inside. It was freakin’ cold out there.

Gigadog, aka Her Royal Fuzziness, had her second birthday this past week. Sadly, the pet store discontinued the carob and peanut butter cakes so she had to settle for yogurt-frosting oatmeal cookies with red sprinkles.
Since I know you’re dying to see what two-year old Gigadog looks like, here she is, snuggling with Macrocat:

I had to spend a lot of time at home with the younger boy, so I managed to cross off something that’s been sitting on my to-do list for almost a year. Of course, I had a bit of help. This is the largest lego kit I’ve ever owned, and the first I’ve had since I was…five? It was 1200+ pieces worth of building goodness, and every piece was fantastic. This has made me wonder if one goal for the new year should be to get another kit. Of course, a more immediate goal is to find a place to put it…
