The PhD badge July 8, 2010

I made a shift a couple months ago.  Rather than doing work on geodynamo, I will be working on solar dynamo.

The younger boy started talking about jobs.  He said he wants to study ‘electrics’, like his dad.  He said he wants to figure out how things work.  Then he started talking about how I study Earth to figure out how it works.  I guess I hadn’t informed him of the change so I said that I’m going to do a project involving the sun instead.  He got very excited and wanted to sit next to me and watch me study the sun.  Rather than tell him I was blogging bore him, I pulled up a picture of the sun and we talked about how it has flows that move around inside.

At one point, I said that maybe some things I learn could be used to study Earth, too.  He asked, “But you have to finish this first?”

“Yes,” I replied.

“When you’re done, do you get a badge?”

No, but now I think I want one.  After I get it, I’ll pin it on my shirt every time I go out, just like the younger boy likes to do with his junior  park ranger badge.

I think I want one too! Want to shop for badges together? Should we wear it on a hat? A vest?

I think we need a whole uniform. Something that looks more impressive than the poofy gown. (I like the gowns, but they look silly wearing them in public. I don’t imagine they command much respect.)
