I haven’t done polls on here before, but there’s a time to try everything.

Based on a facebook discussion, I was made aware that some people pronounce ‘μ’ like ‘moo’. I had never heard it pronounced that way as I have always heard it as ‘mew’. So how do you pronounce it?

How do you pronounce μ?

1. Adam Villani - September 21, 2010

Like “moo,” but I don’t draw out the “oo” for a long time as I would when imitating a cow.

2. Fluxor - September 21, 2010

3. Ron Schott - September 21, 2010

mew or m-you

From Wikitionary: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mu#Pronunciation

Wikitionary says that “mew” and “moo” are British English while “mew” is American English. The Greeks pronounces it “mee”.

So that’s what you should do. Learn all the Greek pronunciation to Greek letters and then use them at work. Then be all snobby about having the “correct” pronunciation.

Mew like my cat pronounces it obviously. And Fluxor’s suggestion for ultimate snobbiness is great.

6. Chris Gammell - September 28, 2010

I said the same on the external survey, but everyone knows it’s pronounced: “micro”
