The younger boy has been expressing an interest in gadgets, and his latest focus has been on sundials.

This started after coming across a video on YouTube about how sundials work:

Of course, after seeing this, we had to make one. I found a NASA website that has sundial you can print and put together. It’s optimized for 38º, which is a bit south of where I am. There are instructions for making your own, as well.

If you don’t feel like you want to make your own but are not happy with the pre-printed one (although we found it to be sufficient accurate for our purposes), you can always try J Giesen’s Sundial Applet Page. There are tons of possibilities, here, but the pie sundial is the one that is similar to the one shown at the NASA page.
