I was driving my son to school and listening to the radio.  They came on the air and said that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers.  They gave no details, so I immediately jumped to the conclusion that a small aircraft pilot had messed up and had an aviation accident.

Later that morning, I was studying physics in the Memorial Union at NDSU.  I remember I was sitting right next to the Corner Mart across from the coffee cart before they moved it.  One of the lecturers I knew in the English department and came up to see if I’d heard the news.  He was very keyed up.  He said that a second plane had hit the other tower, a plane had hit the pentagon, and a another plane had crashed somewhere.  No, these weren’t small planes – they were all airliners.

I really couldn’t imagine such a thing.  I didn’t hear anything else that day…no cell phone at that point, or I’m sure I would’ve heard more.  When I went home that night, I started to watch the news.  I think I spent most of the evening crying.  I simply couldn’t imagine why anyone would do such a thing.  I still wonder.

I don’t get it either. I think it’s just people who were only slightly more sophisticated than common thugs. I suspect the few brains behind it did it because they couldn’t attack US directly and hoped to provoke an irrational response that would strain our capabilities, curb our freedoms, and create the perception of a huge clash of civilizations (as opposed to thugs harassing civilization).

They got very lucky in succeeding tactically and strategically.

The perpetrators could be smarter and stronger than I give them credit for. I’m no expert. It just seems people who miss a huge clash of civilizations are those who want to aggrandize them.
