Another one bites the dust April 30, 2012

I’m typing my first post from my new laptop. Ordinarily, getting a new computer as an occasion for great happiness…except when it’s not. While I got a nice new computer, I have to admit that I’m disappointed. Some of you may remember that a few months ago, my macbook hard drive bit the dust. I replaced it with another and things have been cruising along rather nicely. That is, until Saturday morning when I left the computer unplugged and it went through a hard shut down. When I booted it back up…well, it didn’t boot. And it looks like I lost the hard drive completely.
On the up side, I have a backup that’s only a month old, so I certainly didn’t lose as much as I could’ve.
And the whole time, this song has been running through my head:
That sucks. I actually hate getting a new computer because then you have to reinstall everything which is a pain when you’re dealing with Uni software. Plus, I run a lot of LaTeX stuff which requires specific files to be in the PATH. That takes a bunch of days to get right.
Yeah, I’m still tangling with things, and it’s a major pain. Hopefully I’ll have things straightened out in a day or two. I’m still trying to see if there’s a way to recover the files that I lost from the past month.
Is this a new MacBook ? I honesty think that their quality has gone down significantly.
It’s about 3 years old. Original hard drive died about 6 mos. ago. While I initially attributed it to the hard drive (and thus the HD manufacturer and not Apple), the fact that a second has gone makes me think it’s the controller. Someone else mentioned that there’s an extended process to put it in sleep, and if it’s moved during that time, you can damage the HD. Don’t know. I also don’t know if 2 1/2 – 3 years is good or bad for a laptop because I still have the laptops I bought in 2000 and 2001, and they both still work. I would definitely have to say that things have changed since I got those.
Macbooks are evil. Nothing but trouble for me. I’m going with Linux when I buy a laptop later this year.
