Feeling like an academic August 15, 2011

It’s amusing to me that, last year, I realized how much more peaceful life could be when one is not teaching.

But when I was called and asked to teach a class this semester, I decided to take it.  Yes, it’s more work and craziness, but I do miss being in a classroom and interacting with students.  I also like it when those students are fairly technical, so I’m happy that I’ll be working with future engineers.

So I’m back on the semester system soon.

I’m doing my job at work, but that, lately, includes working on papers and research proposals.  And I’m throwing in some teaching, as well.

I’m starting to feel like an academic, although I’m not really sure what what term entails.  (I get the impression that professors think it only includes other professors.)

Of course, a friend says that a sure sign I must be on my road to academia is that I procrastinate by blogging…

I don’t have time to write a full post this morning, so you can either wait until tomorrow or check out my post this week at my favorite engineering blog: Overhaul Academia – Except in Engineering.  My argument is that there are a lot of reasons the production of PhDs seems to be working in the current academic system, despite all the arguments for overhaul in other fields.

If neither of those is satisfying, you can take a look at the latest pics of Gigadog.  In the first one, she was trying to lay down in the cat bed.

The second involved her mauling the Monty Python Killer Rabbit.  Probably a good thing there’s no Easter bunny hopping around.
