I don’t know about you, but sometimes I have a hard time figuring out how to celebrate birthdays. Some years, you just go out to eat, or sit around the house, or hope someone makes your favorite meal. This year has been rough because of everything I have on my plate right now.
Milestone birthdays are important in an odd sort of way, so I try to do something extra fun, and it’s important to take those opportunities when you have them. On this occasion, I thought maybe riding a horse with my grandmother and the younger son would be a cool adventure. I’d never been on a horse before.
The ride was an hour-long, guided trail ride in Medora, ND. You can see Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the background, so the scenery was fantastic. I found out that horses scare me a bit, and that you shouldn’t pat them on the rear flank the way your dogs like their people to do. (Apparently I almost sent my horse over one of the guides while she was trying to remove his halter.) After the ride, I found out that my grandmother had used to love riding horses in her younger years, but hadn’t been on one since my mom was a little girl.
It was a great way to celebrate my grandmother’s 85th birthday. I hope we can keep having wonderful adventures together for a long time. I just hope she doesn’t want to go sky-diving any time soon…

My birthday is coming up in a few days, and despite the fact that my husband already got me a present, I’m still thinking of other fun things that I want.
He knew I had to have the purple cover.
I thought a new pair of running shoes might be in order, but those are no longer in the category of ‘fun’ and more into the realm of ‘must have’! Also, I got running shoes last year for Christmas, so it would be boring to always get running shoes.
I decided to get in touch with my inner geek and see what she really, really wanted if she had an unlimited budget, space, and time:
Yes, it’s a Barbie. But it’s Mars Explorer Barbie! It’s probably the only Barbie I’d ever want to own, but I have to give two thumbs up to Mattel for this one.
I’ve been eyeing this one for a long time. I wanted to have space battles between it and my lego space shuttle. (Sadly, I’m sure the shuttle would be outgunned.)
I may have to scrounge Ebay to find a Star Trek pizza cutter. ThinkGeek is out!
I do realize they’re coming out with a scaled down version of the LHC…but I want the full-blown version.
And finally, I think I’d book a trip with these guys. At least the $250k is refundable.
So if you could have anything you wanted…what would you want?

It’s not my birthday today. I didn’t post on my birthday. But I thought I should mention it since that was one of the reasons posting has been light. I always like when my birthday shows up because I get to tell people all the famous people who share my birthday and watch as they look confused. I think it’s quite possibly the slowest day for celeb birthdays all year.
I also forgot about another milestone: I’ve been at this new spot on wordpress for over two years now. My second ‘blogiversary’ was July 1st. It’s kind of scary to think it was over 8 years ago that I signed up on LJ and have been putting crap on the internet ever since. (Actually, if you check the way-back machine, you can find the web page I put up in 1994. Yeah, I’ve been putting crap on the World Wide Web since 1994. Remember when we had web pages and not profiles? Just saying that makes me feel old.)
And mostly I wanted to let people know I’m still alive. I’ve been spending a lot of time researching gluten-free diets and am attempting to change some eating habits. I’ve managed to have small bits of fruit here and there, so fructose may be safe for me. Dairy still gives me fits if I don’t take lactase with it. And I have already discovered that one food I ate quite often and assumed to be perfectly safe was, in fact, very bad for me. (Who puts gluten in sausage?!) Our waffle Sunday breakfast menu will have some new items in the coming weeks.
I will have more productive things to say in the coming days, especially with the beginning of the semester. In the meantime, how was your weekend?
